Effective career preparation is vital for college students. Recent data from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) indicates that employers prioritize skills like problem-solving and teamwork. This highlights the need for programs that connect academic learning with practical, real-world application.

Studies on structured student success programs show positive effects on student retention and self-efficacy. While research on graduation rates has shown varied results, the data generally supports these models as effective educational practices for student development.

The Navigator Program consists of four sequential courses that span a student's undergraduate education. This multi-year structure, beginning with a 'Flight Planning' course and concluding with a 'Launch' seminar, distinguishes it from single-semester orientation programs at other institutions.

In the initial 'Flight Planning' course, students examine their personal vocation and purpose. The curriculum develops practical skills, including goal setting with the SMART goal formula. Participants also create a four-year academic and career plan to guide their college experience.

Later stages of the program integrate hands-on career development activities. Students take part in resume workshops, job shadowing, and mock interviews. They also create a professional e-portfolio to present their skills and experiences to potential employers.

Personalized support and relationship-building are central to the program, fostering a sense of belonging. A peer mentor system offers structured guidance, with upperclassmen working alongside faculty to assist new students and provide a relatable source of advice.

The program's impact is reflected in student experiences. Sophomore Jenna Ju stated the program fosters "self-growth as well" as "career growth." This illustrates how the curriculum develops confidence and important soft skills alongside professional readiness.

Program Director Lawna Kurtyka explained that a primary goal is helping students connect their personal mission with the university’s mission to transform society. This alignment, she noted, gives students an advantage in the job market.

Newman University is a Catholic university named for St. John Henry Newman and founded by the Adorers of the Blood of Christ. The university's mission is to empower graduates to transform society through a commitment to academic excellence, service, and a global perspective.
