Skyscraper Technique divides SEO professionals: 57.4% say it works, 6.2% call it most effective

SERPreach compares two Skyscraper Technique polls: 57.4% of voters in an Ahrefs poll said the tactic still works, while 6.2% ranked it most effective in Editorial.Link's survey.

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA, September 11, 2026 — SERPreach today released a side-by-side analysis of two polls that sharpen the industry's view of the Skyscraper Technique. Ahrefs found that 57.4% of 479 social-platform voters believed the tactic still worked, while seven of 113 professionals, or 6.2%, selected it as the most effective tactic in Editorial.Link's 2024 survey — a contrast explained by the polls' different questions.

Key Findings

  • Ahrefs asked, “Does the Skyscraper Technique still work in 2023?” in an X poll posted Jan. 20, 2023, and completed Jan. 21. Of 479 votes, 275, or 57.4%, selected “Yes!” and 204, or 42.6%, selected “Nope.” Source: Ahrefs X poll, Jan. 20-21, 2023

  • Editorial.Link recruited its survey through LinkedIn and reported a sample spanning in-house and outsourced professionals across Europe, the United States, the United Kingdom and other markets. [Source: Editorial.Link, 2024 survey methodology]

  • The Ahrefs result is an open social-platform poll, not a probability sample of SEO professionals. [Source: Ahrefs X poll, Jan. 20-21, 2023]

What the Two Polls Reveal About Skyscraper Outreach

Together, the polls offer a practical signal: marketers can regard a tactic as viable without ranking it above every alternative. The Editorial.Link question forced a comparative choice among tactics, while the Ahrefs question asked for a binary judgment. The samples, recruitment methods and dates also differed, giving the 6.2% and 57.4% figures distinct denominators and meanings.

“The apparent conflict disappears when the questions are printed beside the percentages,” said Sabahat Ali, founder of SERPreach. “One poll asked for a favorite tactic; the other asked whether the tactic still worked at all. Those are useful opinions, but they are not competing success rates.”

The Skyscraper Technique generally refers to finding a well-linked resource, creating a more useful alternative and telling relevant publishers about it. Length alone does not make an asset useful. Original evidence, clearer organization, updated information and a strong fit with the publisher's audience may make an outreach proposition more relevant, but none guarantees coverage or links.

SERPreach says its outreach archive contains more than 100,000 emails sent cumulatively across founder Sabahat Ali's SEO career, which began in 2009. That archive informs practitioner commentary; it was not used to calculate either poll result and is not a controlled test of the technique.

Methodology

SERPreach checked Editorial.Link's archived 2024 report and Ahrefs' completed X poll, recording the exact question, sample, field date and result for each. Only the Ahrefs X poll is included because its completed vote total was available. SERPreach contributed interpretation only. Its cumulative outreach archive spans founder Sabahat Ali's SEO career, which began in 2009.
